As part of the journey of traversing the realms of art, place, social memory, public performance and civic responsibility, MST members involved in higher education encourage their students to link theory to practice through interdisciplinary, creative and ethical approaches to teaching, learning and knowledge production. Public engagement, in the form of residencies, workshops, seminars, internships, guided excursions and other forms of instruction and collaboration, is often both a component and outcome of the creative and research practice for a number of MST members. Working with and learning from local leaders is important to our work and, through our engagement with social and geographic communities, archival sources and oral traditions, and regional environments, MST members encourage their students to do the same. Efforts related to this practice range from short, temporary projects to multi-year endeavors. The following listings include examples of collaborative, immersive and place-based activities through instruction and with the public. Please also see Upcoming, MST Events, Creative Community and Public Art Projects and the Mapping Spectral Traces blog.
