Mapping Spectral Traces V: Day 1 (20th April 2012)
Day 1 of Mapping Spectral Traces V began at the St Anthony's Lecture Theatre, in NUI Galway. The first panel panel entitled "In Search of Place: Irish Visual Cultures, Music and Poetry" comprised Con Holohan (Huston Film School & Digital Media, NUI Galway), Tim Collins (Centre for Irish Studies, NUI Galway) and Anne Karhio (English, NUI Galway). Members of the second panel, "Choreographies of the Irish Body", were Marie Mianowski (Départment d'études anglaises, University of Nantes), Gerry Kearns (Department of Geography, NUI Maynooth), Lisa Godson (GradCAM, National College of Art and Design, Dublin). Discussants Tony Tracy (Huston Film School & Digital Media, NUI Galway) and Victoria Walters (PLaCE, UWE-Bristol) responded to two very thought-provoking and engrossing panels.
The scene changed to the Black Box Theatre, Galway City for the afternoon session. As part of the Dancing Days Festival the CORP_REAL Performance presented works by Jenny Roche (Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick), Rínoach Ní Néill (Galway Dancer in Residence), Fearghus Ó Conchúir, and Andrew Duggan & Cindy Cummings. CORP_REAL continued with an in depth symposium. The panel included Philip Barnard (R-Research Advisor, Wayne McGregor|Random Dance & Visiting Scientist MARC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit), Jenny Roche, Orla Murphy (UCD School of Architecture, Simon J Kelly + Partners), Andrew Duggan and Cindy Cummings (independent artists), and Fearghus Ó Conchúir. A gloriously insightful discussion ensued combining the science and art of the body and performance, which allowed the panel to discuss their work, and share their processes with an enraptured audience.
Between the CORP_REAL events, everyone adjourned to the Black Box foyer, where Rebecca Krinke led the workshop "Mapping Joy and Pain".
The day ended with the launch of the book "Irish Contemporary Landscapes in Literature and the Arts" (ed. Marie Marionowski) at Charlie Byrne's Bookshop in Galway City.
